I've been in Tennessee all week.
My dad and I took a trip to Memphis. Actually, that's a bit inaccurate... the home of Elvis was one stop along the way, but our real destination was further up the Mississippi, a small stretch of road surrounded by cotton fields, known as Proctor City. My grandfather grew up there.
Granddad isn't with us anymore, but people who knew him are, and this trip was a chance to talk with them, collect stories, take pictures, and try to learn a little bit about where I came from. What an eye-opening week. I hope to share some of those stories and images with you sometime soon.
In the meantime, emails and phone calls piled up at home. Thank you, everyone, for your patience... I'm working hard at responding to everyone quickly. As much as I wish it did, life doesn't stop, even for things as important as history and family. If you've called or emailed, I'll be in touch soon.
