11.24.07 - Elissa & Brian

Posted on December 19, 2007

I had a fantastic time shooting Elissa & Brian’s wedding at the end of November. Take a great couple, put them in some amazing venues in a city like Philadelphia, add a tux and a wedding dress plus all of their closest friends and family, and you have the makings for some awesome pictures!

I also want to send huge thanks to Sofia Negron for shooting with me… Sofia is a very talented photographer in Philly and having her along was a lot of fun and really helped put the photography over the top. (Check out her blog for some shots of her in action!)

The ceremony was at the beautiful St. Patrick’s Church.

After which we quickly ran over to Rittenhouse Square for some photos…

It quickly got dark but we managed to finish up with the family and the wedding party, then took Elissa & Brian around a couple of blocks for some night shots. Yes, it was cold!

The reception was at the Ritz Carlton and they had it all decked out for Christmas.

Toast time…

These guys were helping Elissa out with her veil. Normally a bridesmaid’s job, but they got it done. :)

The sounds of Slippery kept the dance floor pretty much packed all night.

See?

What a great wedding!

College

Posted on December 18, 2007

The first time I ever saw a digital camera, I was a sophomore in college. I was used to snapping away with an old (but awesome) Canon AE-1, when I saw that the student activities office had a brand spanking new digital camera that you could sign out for a day at a time. This was a big ol’ chunky piece of plastic, probably weighed 2 lbs, and about two full seconds after you pressed the shutter button, it would take a photo that looked *okay* on screen (at least, it looked okay in 1997) but you would never be able to make a print from the image. I thought it was the coolest thing ever, and proceeded to snap photos of everything in sight. I was going to post one here but all the photos I took are on a floppy disc somewhere, and even if the disc still exists, my computer couldn’t read it.

Anyway, the reason I was remembering all of that today was because I saw the following comic strip, and it really rang true. :)

11.23.07 - Bryn & Josh

Posted on December 17, 2007

Sometimes weddings at this time of year can be challenging… it’s cold outside, the sun goes down early, and the light is thinner. It just makes it a little more difficult to get that perfect, warm, golden-lit shot… but Bryn and Josh were so great and really rearranged their wedding day a bit to make it easier to take photos outside. Here are a few from their day.

A little bit o’ prep…

Having your hair done generally looks like a lot more of a hassle (and occasionally painful) for the ladyfolk.

Josh and Bryn were both pretty relaxed that day, which is how it should be… work hard ahead of time, then just enjoy the day!

A few from the ceremony…

Immediately after the ceremony Bryn & Josh, their families and the wedding party jumped into the limo and we drove over to take some pictures at the Westtown School. 20 minutes later and the sun would have been too far down, so we had to work quick! Even though I was wearing a jacket I was still cold and my fingers were going numb, so I can only imagine how Bryn was feeling but she stuck it out and it was worth it.

Eventually it was just too cold and dark to continue, so we headed over to the reception where things heated up quick! Thanks again, Bryn & Josh… I really enjoyed shooting your wedding!

A note to future brides who are getting married in fall or winter… here are just a couple of things you may want to keep in mind regarding pictures…

* Remember that in November/December/January/February/March, the sun goes down earlier than you think! Be in touch with your photographer about the best time to take pictures.
* It can get cold, and wedding dresses generally aren’t built for warmth! I STRONGLY recommend having some sort of jacket or shawl that goes with your dress that you can wear for photos outside.
* If time is of essence after the ceremony, consider having your photos taken before the ceremony. I understand some couples want to follow the tradition of not seeing each other before the ceremony… but with the right planning, you can make that first moment you see each other one that is very intimate (we can hang back and get some great photos of it too!) and still be able to get your posed pictures taken care of so you can simply enjoy the rest of the day!
